About Denman Works

A practical hub for the social and economic life of Denman Island

Living on Denman, sponsored by Denman Works, exists to support the economic and social health of Denman Island and to help residents, organizations, and local initiatives connect with useful services, community knowledge, and practical resources. Formerly known as the Denman Island Community Economic Enhancement Committee (DICEEC), the society adopted the name Denman Works! in November 2010 and was incorporated in the spring of 2011 as the Denman Works! Economic Enhancement Society. Denman Works now operates under the umbrella of the Denman Island Residents Association (DIRA). It builds upon many years of work collecting and sharing information about local organisations, services, livelihoods, and community resources. In addition to economic enhancement work, Denman Works is also responsible for the Denman Island Bus Service.

Funding and service delivery

Economic enhancement

The Comox Valley Regional District is Denman Works’ funding partner for the delivery of economic services on Denman Island. Economic enhancement is a CVRD service established in 2012 under Bylaw 232, the Denman Island Economic Development Service Establishment Bylaw. An economic enhancement assessment is levied as part of property taxes, and the service is delivered by Denman Works under a renewable three-year contract with the CVRD. The current site notes that the previous contract was renewed on September 8, 2022 for a three-year period ending December 31, 2024, and that a new contract for 2025–2028 is being negotiated.

Bus service

The Denman Island Bus Service (DIBS) is a public transportation program on Denman Island, known as Taystay’ich by the local First Nations, dedicated to providing public transportation for island residents and visitors alike. Operating under the auspices of Denman Works, DIBS formally launched in 2022 as an expansion of the shuttle pilot project in 2021. The Denman Island Bus Service is delivered under a separate contract with the CVRD. The current site notes that this contract runs for two years and ends on December 31, 2025. The bus service is delivered by the Transportation Committee, which reports to the board. Bus Service Website
